Day 27: Most epic scene
Entering the Hyrule Castle underwater in
The Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker

I remember the first time I played this. It was at the end of a lengthy gaming session of a few hours and I was just about ready to call it quits for the night. When this scene unfolded in front of me, with the music and the action and the connection to the essence of the series I just enjoyed the experience of the whole thing greatly.

The black and white then being followed by the restoration of colour. The realisation that you were going to have to battle a horde of some of the most difficult enemies to this point. Connecting the story in your head of the Legend of Zelda, not just as a game but the lore of what builds the series.

I remember standing on the ledge in front of the stature of the hero, surveying the defeated guards and just soaking the surrounding environment in, absorbing the music and atmosphere and everything the scene offered.

Hyrule Castle

At no other point in any game have I really ‘stopped to smell the roses’ to that extent. Wind Waker though, had quite a few of those moments.

I had this scene as my answer for a while but when it came time to add it to my 30 Day Video Game Challenge I had a few others that I thought worthy.

When Link meets Zelda in the Ocarina of Time.
The moon falling in Majora’s Mask
Killing of the Archdemon in Dragon Age Origins
Death of the King in Dragon Age Origins
The final Battle and ending of Portal 2

Wii U Freak Out

OHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH YEAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH.

Just watched Nintendo Direct and had a little Gamer geek moment. I felt like getting up and jumping around like I was 6 and got my NES for Christmas. And then like when I was 12 and got my N64 and played Mario 64 for the first time. I didn’t though, but I haven’t been this excited for a new ‘Gaming’ experience since… since… maaybe… nope. I honestly can’t remember the last time I was this keen for a game… Ocarina of Time I guess.

Which brings me to my OHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH YEAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH point.

Legend of Zelda the Wind Waker is getting it’s HD on and coming to the Wii U!!!

If you have ever played the Wind Waker you will know that is an awesome thing. It is my number 1 most awaited game to replay I just can’t find the time to dedicate to setting it up and playing it again. I would have eventually found the time to do so but now, NOW I will wait for the HD enhanced version and spend my holidays playing the damn thing.

I liked Ocarina of Time, everyone did. It’s sold nearly 8 Million, not including ports and features in the top 5 of almost ANY ‘best games of all time’ and quite a lot of No 1 choices. It rocks. But as epic as it was the Wind Waker was different and in my opinion better in sooo many ways. Despite it’s cartoony style I remember spending a significant amount of time checking out the scenery in awe. I will admit though that having played all the Zelda games before hand makes the games IMPACT better.

But holly crap it’s gonna be awesome on the Wii U, linked with the Miiverse and stuff. If I wasn’t a massive Nintendo fan and didn’t pre-order and by a Wii U (I did), I would totally buy a Wii U JUST for a re-release of the Wind Waker.

Also, a new 3D Mario game and Mario Kart are in the works (as they damn well should be). There is a new original Zelda series being made, and since they are re-releasing the Wind Waker I would be guessing the new Zelda will have a more realistic verion. OHHH YEAAAH.

Xenoblades…. or X is on it’s way as well. Which is something I am excited about and have never played the Wii version

OHHH CRAP.. I forgot as well that there is going to be a new Yoshi game. I love Yoshi, he is so cool.

Woah, that is a lot of geeking out for someone that should be writing lesson plans for school. Screw that I’m too excited. I’m going to go play Skylanders for a while and check out the scene on Miiverse.

Making a SMART Labyrinth, got some suggestions?

Building a game with SMART Notebook. A series of questions where when you get the correct answer you progress down and if you get a wrong answer you take a hit and lose a heart. I have based it on the savage labyrinth from LoZ Wind Waker.
There are all kinds of questions and I have tried to mix it up.

Hardest part of a modern game?

Anyone that has played the Wind Waker (G-R-E-A-T game) and gone down all those holes on Outset Island just to see what is at the bottom (not much) will have known they have faced a challenge rarely found in modern games. Dubbed the ‘Savage Labyrinth’ this is my pick for the hardest part in a modern game. It’s long with more difficult enemies. There are no items dropped by enemies, meaning you can’t replenish your health for the entire ordeal. Most importantly if you eventually die you start again from the beginning.

I know that games are getting easier, so much so that now it’s not a matter of if you can beat the game but if you have enough time to beat the game.
