Day 29: A game you thought you wouldn’t like, but ended up loving

I first played this in the days where you would hire games around Saturday lunch and play them non-stop until Sunday afternoon.

I would have been about 10 and staying at a friends house for the weekend and he wanted to hire this. I complained so much ‘racing games are crap’

Mario Kart was like no other racing game of it’s time. I ended up playing this until the wee hours of Sunday morning. Racing games were no longer crap.

Since then I have owned every Mario Kart on a Nintendo home console. Including this little gem even though I bought it well into the Gamecube generation. Mario Kart Double Dash even featured in my 30 Day Video Game Challenge list.

Day 13: Game Played More Than 5 Times

Where after some though I concluded that I had probably played it well over 250 times.

check out the other days of my 30 Day Video Game Challenge

I mentioned in a post the other day that I would have to put some thought into this challenge question. The System of Choice. I think these pictures here are more than enough evidence to justify a decision.

I have never owned an Xbox but have a PS3 and although games like Skyrim, Oblivion, Dragon Age were only available on Sony or Microsoft, they weren’t enough to stand up against what I have always had. A Nintendo.

My choice was always going to be a Nintendo system it was just a matter of which one.
Not the Wii U - it’s too early to tell
Not the SNES - I actually had a Mega Drive in that era. Not that the SNES isn’t an awesome system
I ruled out the NES because although it has a bagillion classic games it’s a bit far in the past to hold weight against more recent developments
I ruled out the Wii because of the overkill of shovelware party games. Tough decisions needed to be made.

This left me with the Gamecube - The most underrated system of ALL time with classics like:
Wind Waker - my favourite Zelda game
Mario Kart Double Dash - my favourite Mario Kart
Mario Golf - my favourite golf game ever
Tales of Symphonia, Mortal Kombat Deadly Alliance, … this was what sealed the victory. Although a lot of my favourite games were on the Gamecube. I had favourites and more on the Nintendo 64

Again, look at these game pictures above and try and disagree that the Nintendo 64 isn’t a great choice for Game System of Choice

Day 10: Best Gameplay of the 30 Day Video Game Challenge

I chose Goldeneye for best gameplay for 1 significant reason. It was the first legitimate FPS as well as the first game to show the true potential of a Multiplayer game.

The single player missions incorporated a bunch of firsts into the gameplay. Covert style missions with objectives. Different levels of difficulty. Cheats you could get without cheating but by earning them with skill (I was so proud when I finally unlocked the Invincibility Cheat).

The multiplayer was something never experienced. Death matches with heaps of different customisation levels. Sure CoD fans today would look down their nose at what the Goldeneye 64 could offer but I would say it’s fair to say without Rare and Goldeneye 64 (and later Perfect Dark) there would be no CoD like we have today.

What I think was the best and most underrated aspect of Goldeneye 64 was the controls. Everything was perfectly balanced. The aiming (and assisted auto-aim) meant anyone could get in and have a real chance. The R-Trigger aiming with crosshairs was simple and intuitive. The controls made a new type of game with a new type of multiplayer seem familiar.

30 Day Video Game Challenge Day 6: Most annoying character

Annoying game characters. At first I was thinking this would be a boss or an enemy or something. You know, one of those pain in the ass guys that just stuffs you up. But I decided to think a bit more about it and after that didn’t work I checked out an annoying game character list here
I went through it just dismissing the characters until I cam across one. This one and I thought “YOU!” “YOU were so annoying in the game”
That one is Natalya Simonova from Goldeney 007 on Nintendo 64
image It was a great game, obviously and her annoyanceness probably made the game more rewarding at times. But I’m sure any Goldeneye 64 fan has screamed this at the TV more than once

STOP RUNNING INTO EXPLOSIONS!!!
MOVE WHEN THEY ARE SHOOTING YOU!!!
HURRY UP AND STOP WASTING TIME SHOOTING PEOPLE!!!
DAMN YOU NATALYA YOU COST ME THAT CHEAT!!!
and the best of all, in her annoyingness performance.

JUST BLOODY FINISH WITH THE COMPUTER AND GET OUT OF THE WAY.

Ohh there you go again you stupid Natlya. Getting in the way of my shotgun again.

Assignment Hunter

I want to finish this damn assignment so I can play some Monster Hunter Tri. Haven’t played in ages and I have been listening to the music while I work on this bloody assignment.

ON another note, once this assignment is done I will have 3 weeks of casual on call with little other work to do. Here is my list of things to do

  1. Beat Legend of Zelda Skyward Sword (I am sadly not even interested in the game much anymore but I refuse to let it beat me
  2. Play Prototype 1 on PS3 (this is so that I can get Protype 2
  3. Play Dragon Age 2 (had this unopened for around 4 months now and it needs to be played)
  4. Play Daegon (possibly) 3 or 4 or something (again had it for 4 months no play)
  5. DO LOTS OF AIKIDO and prepare a little for my 2nd Kyu grading - weapons a priority
  6. Possibly set up my N64 and give Majora’s Mask a whirl (only played it once until I beat it and not again)

Good list

Also not that anyone would care but if you’re interested in reading my crap assignment I have done it is on:

Boys Education and the inclusion of ICT resources, particularly video games

64’s were tough as balls, bet it still works
well maybe not player 1 or 2 cause they have lost the connections but im sure if you could get player 3 and 4 going it would totally still do the job.
I see that it looks like it was found on a beach… probably spent some time in the ocean being munched on by a giant squid. Just hang it on the line for a bit to dry it out and it will be good to go.
Probably wont be able to play any game that needed the expansion pack though.
Its just a little cosmetic dammage, could probably sell this on ebay for $20 as slightly used.

You know…

Goldeneye 64 was such a great multplayer game.

So much fun with vs 3 other people, infinite ammo, first to 100. It’s good when you spend a few minutes running around a level throwing proximity mines everywhere

Like this…

Then hide in the corner listening to the explosions go off and laughing at this…
